Cleaning and polishing

The first step to selling your car is to clean it heavily inside and out. This is called detailing. Have your car detailed in every little corner. Make sure you remove all odors such as smoking odors. They’re not desirable especially for new family buyers. Remove all personal belongings. Check the glove compartment, the trunk, under the seats. Auto painting and branding

Color preferences differ greatly among people. It may kill a buyer’s desire to buy a used car or send it to the roof. How to determine the price of used cars in Dubai

Determining the right price of a used car can be challenging in the UAE. Cars are abundant in the UAE and the fancier cars are sold for cheaper prices. If you would like to determine the price of your used cars for sale or purchase, start with the following checklist to tips that can help you estimate the price of any used car in the emirate of Dubai.

Compare Listings of your car model online:

One of the first things in your course of action is to find online listings of used cars that are similar to your model. It is very likely that you will find tens if not hundreds of same model cars for sale along with price the sellers are asking for. This will give you a fairly close price estimate of the used car you have in your mind. You can browse through Melltoo Used Cars in UAE and find the listing by hundreds of sellers and the price they are asking for. You can even ask them questions via online chat feature that the app allows.

Car Mileage:

After you get a rough idea of the price range a used car is in, the next step is to check the mileage of the car. The model and year of the car could be same but their mileage can be a lot different especially if one of the car is used by a person commuting within Dubai city and one going to other emirates on a daily basis which a lot of people do as they live in Dubai because of housing rent differences and work in a different emirate. For instance if two cars with same model and year of manufacture are driven 50,000 kilometers and 120,000 kilometers, then the life of second car is definitely less and same is the case with the price.

Used Car Dealers:

If you would like to deal with freelance car dealers, there are a number of them on the Melltoo app. They are selling a number of cars from different models and of different ages. Some may allow you first hand experience of the used car model you have in your mind and can even test-drive them to get the feel of the car. If you do not wish to buy through a dealer but rather than an independent car owner, you can start talking with them and negotiating for a specific used car model can give you a quite close and fair price estimate. The car dealers mostly purchase vehicles that are in good condition and sale it with some profit.

Used car loans

If you buy a car from an individual, you need to secure your own credit with a personal loan (15% rate). If you have just came to Dubai, you will need to wait few months after your start your new job to apply for a loan.

Tips for buying a used car in the UAE

If you are looking to save cash, it is a great idea to go for a used car. Great. Now that you’ve made up your mind, you also need to make sure you do not get ripped off. This is our expert checklist to buying a used car in the UAE without getting ripped off.

Inspecting the Exterior

Believe it or not, you won’t be able to tell whether a vehicle has been in an accident or not at first glance. It is only upon careful inspection that you will be able to tell. Stay away from cars that have been in a collision or crash. Or at least expect a big discount if buying. However, small scratches and dents that may occur in parking lots don’t matter that much.

To make sure that the car is accident free, look at and feel the edges of the joints to see if there is an additional layer of paint done. If the chassis of the car is modified, walk away from it as it very likely will not pass vehicle inspections  by the RTA in the UAE.

Rusty Areas

If the car you are looking to buy is more than five years old, look for rust, as this is a clear sign that the car is not properly maintained. Since the weather of the UAE is hot the bodywork can rust if not serviced regularly. Some dealers may cover up the rust with paint but by examining carefully, you will see the signs of corrosion underneath.

Consider the Climate

You might come across dashing imported vehicles while you are browsing and might fall in love but remember you will be driving those vehicles on UAE roads and the climate plays a big role here. Driving cars that are made for colder climates in the UAE can create a number of problems for the car and for your pocket as well.

Last but certainly not least, make sure you check for any traffic tickets associated with the vehicle since fines have to be cleared before you renew the registration and other documents. Make sure these are cleared before  you pay up and take possession of the car. You can also check it online by entering the vehicle registration number on the Dubai Police Website.

Where to Buy

People in the UAE use online websites to list and sell their cars. For the best deals, look for a car that is listed by an expat who is leaving the country and wants to sell his vehicle as soon as possible. Melltoo’s Used Cars Apps (UAE, Qatar, Saudi, etc.) is a great place to buy used cars from everyday people like you. We value trust and have salient features like online chat and flag buttons to separate good sellers from potentially bad ones. Our customer support handles each flagged user case carefully and make sure the buying and selling experience is hassle free and a win-win for every party involved.

Melltoo Social Classifieds MarketplaceQuestion 1: Tell us a little bit about yourself?

Answer [Transcript]:

Actually I’m from France with Algerian descent.

I’ve been living in Dubai since 2005.

Preparing used car for sale

Question: 2 What kind of cars have you bought and sold since you’ve been in Dubai?

Answer [Transcript]:

Well, Dubai used car is actually a very interesting and very good market and I believe since I’ve been here I’ve sold – I bought, four – if I remember four used cars since I’ve been here.

Well, the first used car I bought was a Pajero 3.0 litres and I bought a Yukon.  It was a basic model Yukon and a Yukon Denali as well.  And the last car I bought recently was a Peugeot 307.

Well, I sold for example – I bought in 2005 also Mercedes Benz, brand new from the dealer and I sold it two years after of driving and using it.  I sold my Pajero to buy my Yukon in 2011 I would say.  The next year I sold also a Sirion, a small car Daihatsu as well.

Preparing used car for sale

Question 3: What do you look for when buying a used car?

Answer [Transcript]:

Well if I speak for myself, the first thing I will do is to look at the proper condition of the body of the vehicle.  I will look at the speedometer as well.  I will look at the inside of the car.  I don’t like people who are smoking usually, so I – inside the car, I’m looking for clean car.  I would look for the total booklet, maintenance booklet and see if the car has been well kept and sent to the “wakala” I would say the agency for maintenance, for regular maintenance.  That’s what I’m looking for the most.  Proper tyres, proper maintenance, no car accidents.  A minor car accident would be ok for me but I try to avoid any car that has been in any kind of accident and repainting.  That’s something I avoid, buying a car that has been even partially repainted, that’s the thing I’m trying to look for when I’m trying to buy used car.  The other criterion are also of course – less than two to three years vehicles and of a brand, basically that is quite depreciating quite fast at the first few years and then keep certain value and has a basically, a good resale value after the third and fourth year basically.

Preparing used car for saleQuestion 4: Do extras like custom rims and sound systems add value when selling my car?

Answer [Transcript]:

I would say that, you know, it’s not something that I’m really interested in, it doesn’t add any value basically.  Is actually just for the, you know, it’s a gimmick but it’s not something I would be interested in actually.

Preparing used car for saleQuestion 5: How do I get my car ready for sale?

Answer [Transcript]:

Well first of all to answer your question that you just asked before, I would already remove the rims if I had any nice rim and put back the original rims because even though it might seem something small, but people they like to keep the vehicle original basically, that’s one thing.  So, second of all I would try if I had, if you have a little extra cash, I would try to give the car a showroom feel and look by spending 2, 300 dirham’s or depending on where you’re going to up to 600 dirham’s for a complete re-lifting of the – polishing of the painting and cleaning of the carpet and the inside of the car.  That will really give your car like a fresh look and attract people basically.  Other thing I would make sure that I keep track of all the receipt that I’ve been spending on your car to keep it, track record of the maintenance of the vehicle.  And of course, keeping your car with the urgency as much as you can, because this shows again that you’ve been taking care of the car properly and this will definitely give a proper resale value to the vehicle basically.

Preparing used car for saleQuestion 6: Should I take my car for full servicing prior to selling it? Does it add value?

Answer [Transcript]:

Well, regular maintenance, I would say oil change and filters and it’s of course it’s something that should be done prior to selling the car.  But since you about selling the car basically, you try basically to avoid the major bills basically that might come after that.  If the tires are pretty discerned you leave them, if everything else is pretty discerned you leave them actually.  The new buyer’s actually the one who’s supposed to take care of the rest of the issues that will pop up eventually.  But definitely, if it’s a time for the oil change, just change the oil and you know keep things, if the tires need to be remove and change, you know it would be nice, but it’s not really your responsibility after you sell the car basically.

Preparing used car for saleQuestion 7: My car has been in a minor “parking” accident. What should I do?

Answer [Transcript]:

Well keep track of the Police report if you have any Police report.  Try to fix it at the “wakala” the agency, and taking pictures that prove that this has been a very minor accident and the bill should reflect as well the fact that the car’s been really in a minor accident as well, you know?

The repair bill, and you can also ask the future buyers to bring, if he’s interested, to bring the car to a shop, a body shop and he can inspect the vehicle either at the body shop or directly to the “wakala” to the agency.

How much does a car cost in Dubai?

How much does a car cost in Dubai? If you consider only the purchase price, then it costs pretty much the same as everywhere else in the world, WITHOUT sales tax. Unlike many parts of the West, the UAE does not impose sales taxes on cars sold.

However, the true costs of car ownership goes beyond the purchase price. There are several things to consider:

  • Costs of depreciation when selling the car
  • Frequency and costs of scheduled car servicing
  • Extra costs related to performing car servicing  (i.e. time off required to take the car in, taxi costs when car is in the shop)
Costs of Depreciation when selling a car

The real price of a car is what you lose on it when you resell the car after a given period of time. A car that costs 100K to purchase may not necessarily be more expensive than a car that costs 60K to purchase. It all depends on how much you lose on the value when you resell the car after a year. This topic is discussed in our blog post “Used Cars in UAE with the best Resale Value“.

Frequency and costs of scheduled services

If you do not wish to invalidate your manufacturer’s warranty, then you have to perform scheduled services as per your car manufacturer’s specifications. Here’s a general rule of thumb:

  • Japanese cars need to be serviced every 5,000km
  • American cars need to be serviced every 10,000km
  • European cars need to be serviced every 15,000km
  • Very high end cars like Ferraris and Meseratis need to be serviced every 20,000km

Servicing a car costs money and the more frequent the services, the more it adds up. Some people argue that frequent servicing of a car prevents costly repairs in the long run. However, it is unclear why European cars don’t require servicing as often as Japanese cars and still run well over time.

When deciding which car to buy, be sure to ask about the frequency of scheduled servicing and how much they cost.

Extra costs related to car servicing

When your car gets serviced, there are other external “costs” that people often don’t think about. For instance:

  • How much time it takes, do you have to take time off work to do this?
  • Taking a taxi to and from the car service center
  • Transportation costs for other members of the family who rely on the car
Some other things to think about related to the costs of car ownership in the UAE:
  • Darker color cars get dirty easily because of the dust and sand in the air. This means they need to be cleaned more.
  • Scheduled car services are not fixed price affairs. As with everything in the UAE, you can and are expected to bargain. As one mechanic professes, the price you pay depends on “your face”.

Used cars with the best Resale values in UAE

Car Resale Value UAE

Nobody buys a car expecting to keep it forever, especially in the UAE where people move regularly. From the moment you buy a new vehicle and start to drive it, it begins depreciating in value. The depreciation of used cars in the UAE is therefore an important consideration when choosing a car.

A lot of people forget that the real cost of a car is not what you pay for it when you first buy it. It’s what you lose when you sell it. Look at the example below:

>> Daihatsu Sirion vs. Mercedes C200 <<

Daihatsu Sirion
Buy 40,000 AED
Sell 25,000 AED (after 1 year)
Cost = 15,000 AED (for 1 year)

Mercedes C200
Buy 100,000 AED
Sell 89,000 AED (after 1 year)
Cost = 11,000 AED (for 1 year)

>> Cheaper car = Mercerdes C200 <<

If you buy a Daihatsu Sirion for 40,000 AED and sell it for 25,000 AED after 1 year, the Sirion effectively cost you 15,000 AED to drive for the year. If you buy a Mercedes C200 for 100 AED and sell it a year later for 89 AED, that car cost you 11 AED to drive. In this case, the Mercedes C200 is actually CHEAPER than the Sirion.

With that in mind, here is a list of the cars that have the best resale value in the UAE:

(The values in parentheses represent the percentage of the original retail price that the vehicle can be sold for after 3 years & 5 years)

  1. 2013 Toyota Corolla (78% & 62%)- Current Market value  at AED 62,000
  2. 2013 Honda Civic EXi (76% & 62%)- Current Market value at AED 70,000
  3. 2013 Lexus ES 350 (73% & 57%)- Current Market value at AED 169,000
  4. 2013 Hyundai Genesis (71% & 55%) – Current Market value at AED 130,000
  5. 2013 Toyota Camry (67% & 54%) – Current Market Value at AED 82,000
  6. 2013 Honda CRV (67% & 52%) – Current Market value at AED 85,000
  7. 2013 Ford Edge (65% & 49%) – Current Market value at AED 134,000
  8. 2013 Chevrolet Cruze (64% & 47.5%) – Current Market Value at AED 52,000
  9. 2013 Infiniti QX80 (62.5% & 46%) – Current Market Value at AED 175,000
  10. 2013 Mazda 6 (62% & 44%) –  Current Market Value at AED 60,000

So there you have it, with the Toyota Camry 2013 proving the most economical and cost efficient so far. Want to know more about these cars, check out this great article on the 10 best cars with resale value in UAE by Suhail Ajmal.

How to get the best Deals on Used Cars in UAE

When you are buying used cars in UAE, there are certain factors that you should always keep in mind. These are things you should look out for and you are most certain to get good deals and great value for the car you are buying at the end of the day.
To be honest, Negotiating the best price for a car is sometimes not the easiest thing in the world. Left for me, i just want to see a car i like, ask for the price, pay for it and off i go! But sometimes, that isn’t usually the case. People sense vulnerabilities sometimes and would want to take you for a ‘ride’ (pardon the pun).
To put your self in a good position therefore, keep the following in mind.
  • Take a little time to do research on how much the car in question generally costs on the market. You could look around some dealerships or even classifieds. This should give you a general sense of the price and also help you be well prepared in terms of budget.
  • Be sure and certain that the car in question is of proper age. What do i mean by this? Proper age for a used car is generally between 3 to 5 years, depending on the handling and maintenance of the previous owner or owners.
